In an improper fraction, the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The number of whole times becomes the whole number.
What is left over, you write as the numerator of the fractional part. The denominator stays the same.

When dividing with a remainder, you look at how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend.
You find the part that is used exactly by multiplying the quotient by the divisor.
What is left after that is the remainder. This remainder must be smaller than the divisor.

So you take the greatest number of times without going over the dividend.

- Calculate the part usedCalculate how much of the dividend has been used by multiplying the divisor by the number of whole times.
You use multiplication with equal groups.
A × B means that you take the same amount B, A times.Instead of adding again and again, you calculate the product all at once.
- Determine the remainderSubtract the used multiple from the dividend to find the remainder.
The remainder is what is left after you have removed the whole groups.
If you know which product of the divisor already fits, subtract that product from the dividend.
What is left is the remainder.
