Comparing decimal numbers

Theory

How do you compare decimal numbers?
Kommagetallen vergelijken00.511.522.533.544.55AB

In a decimal number, the whole part is to the left of the decimal point. To the right of the decimal point are tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

First compare the whole part. If that is the same, compare the digits after the decimal point from left to right.

An extra zero at the end does not change the value: 3,5 is the same as 3,50.

  1. Compare the whole part
First look at the number before the decimal point.
  2. Compare after the decimal point
Add zeros at the end if needed, and compare from left to right.
  3. Choose the greatest number
Choose the number with the greatest value.
Which number is greater: 3,47 or 3,5?
  1. Compare the whole part
The whole parts are 3 and 3.
  2. Compare after the decimal point
Read as 3,47 and 3,50 to compare fairly.
  3. Choose the greatest number
    The greatest number is 3,5.
