Dividing an amount in a ratio

Theory

How do you divide an amount in a ratio?

A ratio divides a total into fixed parts.

First add the ratio parts. Then you know how many equal parts the total consists of.

Divide the total by that number of parts. Then multiply by each part of the ratio.

  1. Add the ratio parts.
  2. Divide the total by the number of ratio parts.
  3. Multiply the value of 1 part by the left ratio part.
  4. Multiply the value of 1 part by the right ratio part.
Divide 60 euros in the ratio 2 to 3.
  1. 2 + 3 = 5.
  2. Calculate the value of 1 part
    60 ÷ 5 = 12.
  3. Calculate the first part
    12 × 2 = 24.
  4. Calculate the second part
    12 × 3 = 36.
